  • Why should men care about their weight?

Is weight purely a woman’s issue?

  • The proportion of men who are obese is increasing and if current trends continue, it is estimated that 47% will be obese. Men should be even more careful to manage their weight because they are more prone to putting on weight around their middle (visceral fat) where it does the most harm. The proportion of men with a raised waist circumference increased from 20% in 1993 to 34% in 2008.

Men are more likely than women to develop a range of serious, disabling and potentially life-threatening long-term health conditions that are preventable, and are more likely to do so at an earlier age. Many of these are related to being overweight, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and colo-rectal cancer.

  • Also:

    • Men are less well informed about health than women
    • Men are less likely to follow prevention advice and instead will take risks with their health
    • Men tend to seek medical help at a later stage

This all contributes to why a male’s life expectancy is lower than a female’s.

It doesn’t have to be this way...

    • Get informed – what are your BMI and waist circumference measurements? Are you at risk?
    • Listen to the advice of health professionals and scientific evidence – losing weight and changing to a healthy lifestyle will improve your health in the short and long term. Why risk preventable diseases when you can take control of your weight now?
    • Get a checkup - if you’re overweight, you are more likely to have existing health problems now, even if you’re not aware of them.

Ask your doctor or practice nurse for a body MOT that includes blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol tests.

  • Men are getting fatter

Between 1993 and 2008 the proportion of men with a BMI in the normal range decreased from 41% to 33%, while the proportion who were obese increased from 13% to 24%. This puts obese men only 1% behind obese women, and by 2015 – if current trends continue – men are predicted to overtake women and 36% will be obese.

Being overweight is linked to a higher risk of many serious diseases. Men are naturally at higher risk of many of these (e.g. cardiovascular disease), whatever their weight, so it is even more important for them to stay at a healthy weight.
