The proportion of men who are obese is increasing and if current
trends continue, it is estimated that 47% will be obese. Men should be even
more careful to manage their weight because they are more prone to putting on
weight around their middle (visceral fat) where it does the most harm. The
proportion of men with a raised waist circumference increased from 20% in 1993
to 34% in 2008.
Men are more likely than women to develop a
range of serious, disabling and potentially life-threatening long-term health
conditions that are preventable, and are more likely to do so at an earlier
age. Many of these are related to being overweight, such as cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and colo-rectal cancer.
